Frequently Asked Questions
Does Massage Hurt?
There may be a component of discomfort in the treatment of some conditions, particularly with conditions that are painful to begin with. Your therapist will inform you of possible discomfort associated with specific treatments before beginning.
Because everyone has a different tolerance to pain, your therapist should check in frequently during treatment and adjust the treatment according to your personal feedback. A skilled massage therapist can customize each treatment in order to maximize results, while keeping discomfort to an acceptable level.
What do I wear?
Comfort is always the key. Working directly on the skin will usually provide the best result, but patients may undress just as far as they feel comfortable. Most clients undress to their underwear and others choose to remain fully clothed. Loose, light clothing is recommended for those who prefer not to undress.
How exposed will I be?
During treatment the entire body will be draped so that only the area being treated is exposed. Patient comfort is the primary guiding force.
Is one treatment enough?
Yes, if your goal is simply to relax and rejuvenate. More complicated conditions may require a series of treatments.
How often should I get Massage?
Every client requires a different timeframe. In acute cases, where the goal is immediate pain relief, treatments will probably be more frequent. In chronic cases, treatments are less frequent, but may continue for a longer period of time. In all cases the therapist will advise a treatment schedule that facilitates fastest relief and lasting results.
Do I need to see a Doctor before receiving massage?
GGenerally not. Since 2001, a doctor's referral has not been required to see a Massage Therapist. However, if you participate in an extended care insurance plan or have access to ICBC, WCB, DVA or RCMP insurance coverage, call your extended service provider and ask whether you require a doctor's referral.
Do I have to disclose all of my health conditions to my RMT?
Everything discussed between the patient and the therapist is completely confidential. It is always best to inform your Massage Therapist of your whole health picture so he/she she can plan the most appropriate and effective treatment for you. Awareness of each patient's needs and concerns helps a therapist adjust treatment and homecare for the individual.
Is there a cancelation policy?
Once an appointment has been reserved for you, it becomes unavailable to other patients. As a courtesy to those in need of urgent care, please give a minimum of 24 hours notice of cancellation. Cancelling with less than 24 hours notice will result in full billing of the missed appointment.
Does the gender of the Massage Therapist make a difference?
No, it's a matter of personal preference. A larger therapist may be able to deal more effectively with larger or more heavily muscled patients, whereas a smaller framed patient may prefer a more delicate touch. That being said, effectiveness depends more on the therapist's energy level than his/her gender or size. An effective therapist will deliver the same depth and quality of treatment at the end of the day that he/she gave at the start of the day. His/ her energy level should also remain consistent from the start of the week to the end of the week.
